(Okay, so maybe not quite that many...)
I've found that this boxed set is a real prize, especially if you can get it on clearance. On the surface, it's a great source of Doomtroopers and Legionnaires, Necromutants and Centurions ... but with a little bit of work (and multiple copies of the same set), I found it has some other uses, too.
Chasseur w. Deathlockdrum -- Just take that Cuirassier and paint half his face "flesh"-colored. He's about the same size as the Chasseur, anyway, and you end up with an "Enhanced Chasseur" heavy weapons carrier. Combined with all those Chasseurs with the sword-and-gun combo (I pretend those Plasma Carbines are actually P1000s, and the swords CSA404s. ;) ) he'd make a great squad support guy, or Hero.
Highlander Veteran -- I used a plastic "Dwarf" head from an old Fantasy Regiments set, put in the place of Sean Gallagher's head on this figure. Painting up enough other "Sean Gallaghers" to form a unit of Violator- wielding Highlanders, this guy stood out nicely as the squad leader. (A bit older, you see, with that beard, and with that nifty Viking helmet...)
Nepharites of other Apostles -- The "Nepharite of Algeroth" is a bit too shrimpy compared to the metal ones that have come out. However, I found that he's large enough to be believable for some other Apostles, with some minor changes, including filing off or puttying-up the "Algeroth" emblems.
Muawijhe: I replaced the head with an Orc head (though not necessary) and used bits of putty to make "worm-hair" on the head. Doing the "worms" yellow with a green wash made for a nice effect, and then doing the rest of the outfit in random colors and check patterns did nicely. For chains, use bits of twisted hobby wire for a quick fix.
Semai: Just removing those three spikes from the head should suffice, and paint the guy in dark colors.
Demnogonis: Again, I used an Orc head instead of the regular head, and then used putty to add various "pustules" and other gross stuff. Voila!
Curator -- I just used a Centurion, and added some putty to turn the cartridge on the Voriche into a more rounded "bulb", painting that a light swirling yellow-and-green to suggest icky fluids inside. For the Skalak, I used some more putty to fill in the "bottle-opener" notch, and then to etch in some "runes". A teensy bit more putty to make a "cybernetic" cover on the eye, and a "pustule" here and there, and to make a Demnogonis emblem in relief on the shoulderpad, and here we go! Leave off that emblem, and the job's even easier. =)
Templars of the Wheel -- More putty: All I had to do was apply a little bit to the face to make that "facemask", and score it with an exacto blade, then apply some more to make a "helmet" (to cover that bald spot). For the squad leader, I gave him extra big head spikes to make him stand out. Thus: mutated-looking Ilian Templars (appropos, no?) with Belzarachs -- armed with the same cost as a Kratach and Templar Mace combo, just with a little more damage on the ranged side and a little less on the CC side. Not quite perfect, but I've got the Necros to spare. =)
Incinerator Carrier -- I took a Necromutant, clipped off the muzzle and bayonet, then glued on an extra head that had come with a Rat Ogre (from a certain company left unnamed). I'll dig into my bits box for some other extra monster heads for the muzzles of other flamethrowers, or maybe just use some putty for a semi-abstract monster head. Some putty or some "bitz" from the box make for a tank on the back, and then I use a thicker piece of wire with some thinner hobby wire tightly spiralled around it for a "segmented pipe" that runs from the tank to the back of the gun. Tada! A Tormentor. =) (For a related conversion to a Scythe of Semai for one of my "Templars", I used a toothpick with a few lengths of wire glued along its length to make a "chaingun" set of barrels, with thin bits of putty to make the "braces" holding the barrels together. Attach that and some misc. details, and I've got a pretty good Scythe. =) )
Immaculate Fury with Scythe of Semai -- Those Razides are just too small for Razides. More putty -- This time to make a "loincloth" to cover that sizeable hindside, to put a little horn on the guy's head, and then I add a big armored "frill" around the neck. I used putty, but cutting a piece from plastic card should do the trick. The end effect looked like an Immaculate Fury with a Scythe of Semai, complete with bayonet. (It's nice how the Scythe comes in so many variations!)
Legionnaires of Other Apostles -- That's /easy/. The shoulderpads aren't embossed, so you can paint any Apostle's sign on there you want. I've sort of "color-coded" the skin of my Legionnaires. For Heretics of Semai, I have a pale flesh color, fading to white. For Demnogonis, flesh washed with putrid green (ewwww!). For Muawijhe, white skin, and really garish colors. For the Undead guys, my favorite effect is yellow with a purple wash. Makes a really icky dirty brown color. =) And those Kratachs work just fine for standard armament for the Legionnaires all around!
CC Ezoghoul -- I used a Voriche clipped from a Centurion (who I was kitbashing as a heavy weapons carrier) and replaced the Ezoghoul's Blutarch with it, adding some putty "cables" to suggest a Necrotech "fusion" with his arm. Boy, that pistol looks dinky, but now I have an Ezoghoul better equipped for close combat. To further the effect, I used a long piece of plastic (actually a "flag pole" from Battle Masters) for an Azogar staff, and then a home-made "cutter" tip on the end, gluing the Ezoghoul's waist firm, and wedging the butt of the pole against the base. Tada! Don't get into base contact with THIS guy. =) (Okay, so he IS a little bit short...)
Just some fun I've been having with that set, in addition to painting up the "Doomtroopers" into CC units and squad support. (CC Free Marines! Yeah!) One of the Bob Watts, after a bit of trouble, had his Deathlockdrum transmogrified into a Nimrod. I'll try to do the same with a Gehenna Puker, which should be a bit tougher ... but quite useful for a Free Marine squad. =D And, that plastic "staircase" piece can make a nice bit of table terrain, too.
