Knee Deep (prelude)
by Malvorich, the Dark General
Matt Goncher peered through his high powered binoculars from his position high on the red, barren crag. He did a scan of the valley Sgt. Matthews had assigned him. Nothing, still nothing. There'd been nothing for a whole frigging hour. Goncher figured he should radio in. Yo Sarge! You there? He half grumbled, half whined into his com-link. This whole situation was boring him. He needed to shoot something. And his commanding officer was looking quite promising at the moment. Yeah, Matthews here. What you got, marine? Same thing, jack squat. Reel me in Sarge, I'm getting bored outta my mind! Hey, relax Matty! It was Jackson's voice. If you're so eager to get going, why don't you just start shooting at the Citadel over there. Betcha' you'd see some action then! Oh bite me, Al. Albert Jackson was no stranger to the Free Marines, but he'd been kicked out of several squads already for either disobedience, or just pissing off the commanding officer. He was somewhat brash, and quite honestly, had some kinda freaky blood lust. Almost as bad as Goncher's. Matt had seen Al in battle versus the Legions several times, and the man fought like an animal. He shot anything that moved, and nearly blasted several Marines in the proscess. He'd even seen Al foolishly a mostly wounded (and needless to say VERY angry) Razide in hand to hand combat. The poor schmuck was in intensive care for a week, but it was better than the Razide's condition, which was more like hamburger. Alright soldiers, zip it! It was Matthews again. We're on our way. We just got a report from some Banshees. They say we got somethin' BIG comin' our way. They didn't sound too happy either, and you know how those wackos are. Yeah, Matt new. The Banshees were like Goth's with rocket fuel strapped to their backs. They were forever depressed, obsessed with death, and, in Matt's opinion, loony to go ripping through the sky on those time-bombs that looked like jet-packs. Give me the ground any day. He muttered. Still, it concerned him. Banshees didn't scare easy. It must be really big to rile them. Matt took another look through the scanner, expecting to see nothing. He wasn't so lucky. He could clearly make out several undead. And one of those Centurion thingies yelling gibberish at them. Not a problem, at least not a big one. Centurions were smart, but could be dropped by a few well placed shots. So far nothing he and his fellows couldn't... Uh-oh. Goncher said out loud. He picked up two things on the scanner, both big, blue, and oogly. I didn't like the sound of that ŒUh-oh' man. Out with it. The sarge uttered into the comm. Stalkers, Sarge, two of Œem. I'd bet my boots on it. They're movin' in some kind of formation. Like a caravan or something...There are more undead with them too. I'd say about thirty. Good news is there's only one centurion I can pick out, and a couple of the Necro-muties. But the Stalkers seem to be the big guns. Hmm. Was all the Sarge said. Even Al didn't have anything smart to say. Stalkers were no laughing matter. Goncher had recently heard rumors of an increase of Stalker activity in the area, but had hoped it was ONLY a rumor. This wasn't good at all. And it was quickly getting worse. Oh crap. Crapcrapcrap. Sarge, things ain't getting any better. They got one of them big, centaur lookin' doo-dads with Œem also. He could see the massive thing trotting around the bend in the valley. It was hideously ugly, and yet somehow majestic at the same time. But the massive sword it held in it's hand was a reminder of it's sole purpose. Goncher had fought the Dark before, but had never had the chance, thankfully, to get up close and personal with one of those...things. Damnitt. What's their direction? Sgt. Matthews was sounding more and more concerned by the minute. That didn't help. I'd say north-northwest. My bet is that they're headed for the outpost. But with that kind of stuff, they might just roll over it and keep going. We have to stop them Sargent. It was Al. He sounded both impatient and dead serious. Not at all like his normal, chipper self. He too saw the seriousness of the situation. We gotta' stop Œem now. Don't be foolish, soldier! Jennings! Radio for reinforcements. Tell Œem to head for the outpost, evac all non-essentials, and bring the biggest god-damn guns they can find. I'll bet there's alot more comin'. D-damn straight Sarge. Goncher said as the color drained from his face. Gonch? Good god man, tell me it's getting better... Goncher swallowed hard. Hell no. Sarge?.... Speak up, damnit! Don't keep me waiting! What Matthew Goncher saw in the valley nearly sent him running. It was, by far, the biggest mass of muscle and metal he'd ever seen in his life. It's black, iron armor had spikes sticking out of several places, large enough to impale several people on at a time, and it had two huge, red tusks jutting from either side of it's Volkswagen Beetle sized head. It was a monster like none he had ever seen. It hefted a massive gun in two arms, and a large pole with a buzz-saw on one end in another set. Goncher blinked. Had he seen right? FOUR arms? He readjusted his binoculars. Yep, four arms alright. Each looked big enough to heft a man without effort and toss him like a football quite a good distance. What was worse, the thing looked smart, and it moved with unnatural speed for something as large as it was. The thing was as big as several jeeps, and armored better than a Bahaus tank, and it easily dwarfed the Ezoghoul, which marched in front of it. Sarge? Right now I'm lookin' at the biggest, ugliest, most massive half-living thing I've ever seen in my entire life. And it looks madder than a hippo with hemorrhoids. Goncher felt a hand on his shoulder, and probably would have blown the owner away if he wasn't so awe struck by the sight before him. It was Sgt. Matthews and the rest of the squad. Goncher couldn't remember when he had seen the Sarge looking so grim. The others were staring, slack-jawed and wide-eyed at the massive thing moving below. The beast was massive, a true Behemoth. Fitting name. Sir, I suggest we set charges, here, now, BIG. The Sergeant only nodded. Things were going to start heating up. Looks like I got my wish. Goncher thought. Damn.
